  1. What is Appliance burning gaseous fuels directive ?
European Council Directive 90/396/EEC ('the Gas Appliance Directive’) relating to appliances burning gaseous fuels was adopted in 1990. It is based on the New Approach and contains essential requirements that an appliance must meet when it is placed on the European market. The Directive does not indicate how these requirements must be met, thus leaving flexibility to manufacturers as regards technical solutions to be adopted

This directive aims to ensure a single Community market in appliances burning gaseous fuels by laying down the essential safety requirements and type-approval rules

Appliances’ means any gas burning appliance used for cooking, (space) heating, hot water production, refrigeration, lighting or washing and having, where applicable, a normal water temperature not exceeding 105°C.

  4. Conformity Assessment Procedure for Appliance burning gaseous fuels directive?
For appliances manufactured in series the compulsory procedure to assess the conformity of the product by having in the first phase execute an EC type examination(Module B) in which a Notified Body checks and certifies that a sample appliance of the production envisaged, meets the provisions of the directive. With the application for type-examination the manufacturer or his authorized representative established within the Community must hand in the technical file satisfying the requirements mentioned in Annex 1 of the directive.

This EC type-examination must always be followed by one of the procedures mentioned below. The manufacturer may opt at his own choice for a :

    • Declaration of conformity to type (Module C).
The manufacturer states in a declaration that the produced appliances are in conformity with the approved type. This declaration must be kept by the manufacturer. The Notified Body checks on site at random intervals of one year or less a sufficient number of appliances.

    • Production quality assurance (Module D)
The manufacturer has had his production quality system (ISO 9002) of the gas appliances concerned approved by a Notified Body. This body must check the certified quality system at least once every two years.

    • Product quality assurance (Module E)
The manufacturer has his quality system for the final inspection and the tests of the appliances (ISO 9003) approved by a Notified Body. The authorised body must check the approved quality system at least once every two years and can test appliances or have them tested.

    • EC verification (Module F)
A Notified Body at the choice of the manufacturer either carries out a random-sample test per batch or tests each appliance manufactured. This body certifies that the appliances are in conformity with the approved type.

On the basis of the above mentioned procedures the manufacturer or importer affixes the CE marking on the appliances, but not on accessories. The attributes should only be accompanied by a Declaration of Conformity in which it is declared that they full file the fundamental requirements of the directive. In addition, it describes all characteristics of these parts and provides a detailed installation or assembling instruction.

For appliances that are manufactured individually or in small numbers the manufacturer may apply the EC verification by unit (Module G). In this procedure a Notified Body checks the appliance and declares that it is in conformity to the provisions of the directive. The body draws up a certificate of conformity which is kept by the manufacturer. When deemed necessary by the Notified Body, the examinations and tests can take place after that the installation of the gas appliance has been completed.
